RRS Cleaning wheel rotary valves – Reliable Conveying Even with Sticky Materials
The continuous and reliable conveying of bulk materials is a key requirement for rotary valves. If the flow of the material is interrupted during the conveying process, downstream equipment and machinery can no longer be reliably supplied with the conveyed medium. On the inlet side, a blockage of the rotary valve can lead to the overflow of silos, containers, or other upstream components. On the outlet side of the rotary valve, an interruption or reduction of the conveying flow leads to an insufficient supply of downstream system components. In the worst-case scenario, this can lead to a production interruption or even a production shutdown.
The flowability of the conveyed medium is crucial for the continuous conveying of bulk materials. Therefore, free-flowing and dry bulk materials are generally also very fluid. However, if the conveyed medium is sticky or clumps together, trouble-free conveying is often no longer possible.
Fluids that are hygroscopic, such as gypsum, attract water from their surroundings. This property can cause the fluid to clump together in the rotary valve, rendering it unusable. Cement exhibits the same properties – a reaction with water or excessive humidity can turn it into concrete. This can very quickly lead to malfunctions in the rotary valves used.
This is how our RRS cleaning rotary valve works: the solution for sticky or caked-on media
The rotor of a cleaning rotary valve typically consists of 6, 8, or 10 rounded chambers, which are laterally closed by so-called side plates.
Rotor side plates increase the functionality of the rotary valve and simultaneously reduce leakage losses. This allows even larger pressure differences between the inlet and outlet of the rotary valve to be bridged.
Below the rotor is the so-called scraper wheel. The scraper wheel is driven by the rotor via gears. This ensures that the rotor and scraper wheel are precisely synchronized. The scraper wheel rotates in the opposite direction to the rotor and, on its circular path, engages precisely with the rounded chamber plates of the rotor, thereby removing any adhering or caked-on material residues.
The cleaned and emptied rotor then continues to rotate towards the inlet and can thus resume receiving the corresponding flow rate on the feed side.
The cleaning wheel rotary valves of the Neue JÄGERs RRS series can be flexibly adapted to their operating conditions. Various materials are available, such as steel, stainless steel, or HAROX® for abrasive conveying media.
The rotary valves are equipped with external flange bearings and packing glands for shaft sealing.
Helical gear drives or flat gear drives are typically used as motors. These are either directly flanged and supported by a torque arm with gusset plate, or connected to the rotary valve via a motor lantern with a coupling.
On the discharge side, the rotary valves can be equipped with a cleaning hatch. This allows easy access to the conveying chamber for cleaning and inspection purposes without having to remove the rotary valve from the pipeline.
On request, the cleaning hatch can also be made transparent, allowing for easy and quick visual inspection of the rotor and the scraper wheel.
Facts and figures – an overview of the performance and variants of our cleaning wheel rotary valves
The RRS cleaning wheel series offers a wide range of products – compact, modular, and future-proof:
- Conveying capacity 0.45 – 320 m³/h at 100% filling level
- Suitable for differential pressures up to 1.5 MPa
- Temperature ranges from -20°C to +450°C or higher upon request
- Materials from standard steel 1.0577 to various stainless steels such as 1.4301, 1.4571, 1.4408, 1.4462 for aggressive media, or standard steel with tungsten carbide coating or HARDOX® 400, 500 or higher for highly abrasive media of any kind
Further versions cover higher pressure and temperature ranges. This allows each RRS cleaning rotary valve to be precisely adapted to even sensitive or harsh conveying applications.
